Religious Education

Religious Education is an integral part of the curriculum at St John Paul II Catholic College. The College provides Catholic secondary education for students in the Quakers Hill, Schofields and Riverstone parish communities.

Terra Sancta College is committed to being authentically Catholic; inviting, inclusive and just with a focus on innovative and personalised learning and teaching, strong leadership and professional development for staff. The College has a strong tradition of academic and sporting excellence as well as a commitment to social justice initiatives.

Terra Sancta College strives to:
* Promote the spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional and social development of each student

* Develop an innovative curriculum that meets the needs of all students of the 21st century

* Achieve our goals through participation, consultation and collaboration across all levels

We have a core team of Religious Education specialists (many of whom have a Masters Degree in RE) whose focus is on a learning and teaching agenda. The College has been developing innovative curriculum initiatives that better prepares students for the School Certificate, HSC and individual faith development.

We have an active liturgical life and students are encouraged to participate in prayer, liturgical celebrations, retreat days, pastoral care camps as well as College and class Masses and reconciliation.

Learning and Leadership Programs

Opportunities For Success, Self-discovery & Leadership

We have adopted a middle-school approach for year 7 students to help them adapt to the new school environment. In their designated classroom and with two teachers for their core subjects students are able to feel secure and can develop a strong educational relationship with their teacher. Students remain subject to the rigours and structures of high school through challenging curriculum and innovative learning programs.

The College’s learning programs reflect our mission to be inviting, inclusive and just, and we provide personalised learning recognising that each student has a different level of academic ability.

Our Learning Enrichment Program is designed to enhance and support the formal curriculum. In the learning enrichment activities students experience a diversity of programmes such as Anti-Bullying, Peer Support, Student Leadership and Drug Awareness. These programmes and activities serve to add depth to the college culture.

Student Leadership
Leadership at St John Paul II Catholic College is modeled on Jesus’ examples of service to others. We provide opportunities for our students to develop the confidence and skills needed to help them become effective leaders of their peers and the College community.

A Student Representative Council chaired by the two College Student Leaders provides students with a forum to prepare and plan activities. The members of the council are nominated by their peers in each group and hold office for one year. The council develops focus areas and action plans at the start of each year.

Student leaders facilitate the support of various Christian organisations and run events and other community building activities throughout the year.

Students are able to access university courses at the Australian Catholic University and the University of Western Sydney while in Years 11 and 12.

Co-Curricular Programs - Freedom To Flourish

St John Paul II Catholic College offers a wide-range of activities that enables students to develop leadership skills and talents and develop a greater sense of belonging, involvement and responsibility.

Public Speaking and Debating
We belong to the Sydney Catholic Schools Public Speaking and Debating Association and our students participate in various competitions hosted by well-known community organisations.

Retreats and Camps
All students are expected to attend the annual retreat, camp or reflection days. These are designed to broaden students’ learning experiences and held develop quality relationships with peers, teachers and God. While faith development is an integral part of daily life at the College, retreats provide a greater opportunity to explore spirituality.

Sport
The College belongs to several sporting associations including the Metropolitan Catholic Schools Association and the New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges Sports Association. Our sporting program provides students with the opportunity to represent St John Paul II at interschool, regional, state and national levels in a wide variety of sports.

Performance
The performing arts continue to be a focus at the College with extensive use of the specialist facilities on both campuses. Students have an opportunity to perform in the College’s Creative Arts Evenings and productions. The College is also involved in other public performances and is the creative hub for CEO initiative, CAPTIVATE, which offers many opportunities in creative arts.

Community Outreach
The College has well established links with local community groups. Fundraising for St Vincent de Paul, East Timor and Caritas Australia is an integral part of the College’s social justice and pastoral care program.
