Grovely State School is an innovative, progressive school, catering for approximately 290 students from Prep to Year 7. In a state first, 2009 saw the introduction of a Montessori Learning Program into our school. Montessori has provided the perfect complement to our quality mainstream program and offers greater choice of educational provision to our families. The school offers Cycle 1, Cycle 2 and Cycle 3 classes taught by trained Montessori teachers.
The Montessori Method of education was developed by Dr Maria Montessori (1870-1952), who was an Italian medical doctor. It was developed over many years of observing and working with children in the learning process. Observing stages of development within many individuals allowed Dr Montessori to develop her holistic intellectual, social, physical and emotional capabilities-based method of assisting childhood development. It consists of an education philosophy accompanied by teaching materials. This method is based on individual guidance according to each child’s specific and immediate needs, changing stages of development and varying capabilities.
Montessori believed that children learn best by being taught concepts in a concrete form, that they need to touch and manipulate objects and not just hear information. In a Montessori school many concepts across the curriculum, and especially in the area of mathematics, are introduced in a concrete way even after children have the transition into thinking abstractly at about the age of nine. Independent effort by the child is encouraged and protected. Concentration is allowed to grow and individuality is honoured. Dr Montessori believed that children have an innate positive attitude towards learning. This attitude is fostered at our school. The dignity and rights of the child are respected always. Positive guidance is used to assist a child to substitute appropriate for inappropriate behaviour. |

. A Prep to Year 7 program
. A strong focus on the achievement of literacy and numeracy.
. A music program comprising strings, brass, woodwind, percussion and choral program.
. Sports programs, with a major emphasis on participation include swimming, rugby league, softball, touch football and netball are offered. A swimming club operates each Friday evening drawing families from within the school and wider community.
. A LOTE program from years 2-7 offers Japanese tuition.
. A school chaplain to assist with family support and pastoral care with the school community.
. Celebrations of Learning are conducted each term to showcase the work of students and provide parents with the opportunity to engage in the learning program of their children. Annual celebratory events include: Education Week; Literacy Week; NAIDOC; Under Eights.
. Our school includes children with special needs as well as those from a range of cultural backgrounds. Our community celebrates the diversity within our school.
. An Out of Hours School Care, facilitated by the YMCA, supports students before and after school and at vacation time.
. Red Cross programs including Early Intervention and Family Support and Breakfast Club are offered. |
