Years 7–10: The Middle Years
An innovative Middle Years Program exists at the College to build solid foundations for future learning. Year 7 & 8 students work with an integrated and inquiry-based curriculum that values multiple intelligences and develops higher order thinking skills in students. Each semester a different theme is explored across all of the eight key learning areas. Additional literacy and numeracy support and an extensive ESL program are available.
Year 9 is viewed as a year of growing independence, opportunities and choice. Students are actively involved in a Community Awareness program and are able to enjoy the benefits of a ‘hands on’ approach to learning. In collaboration with the Victorian Arts Centre, Soundhouse, students undertake a city project in which they complete city-based fieldwork to produce a digital film that responds to an issue. Year 9 students are also able to participate in a mentoring program with a national law firm to work on goal setting, self confidence and building efficacy throughout the year.
All Year 10 students complete a work experience placement during the year and have Individual Learning Plans. Under this arrangement students take responsibility for their own learning and develop independent learning skills that are crucial for success in the post compulsory years of schooling.
