About Mooroolbark Grammar

Founded in 1986 and previously known as Yarralinda, Mooroolbark Grammar has recently established itself within a newly renovated learning environment with a newly developed website, new teaching staff and a new principal, Gabriella Agosta. She has a strong interest in the performance and longevity of the school, being a parent of two of our current students. We are setting up for our goal of reaching more and more students and families who see that overfilled classrooms, underachieving students and learning disorders are today all too common. Now there is an alternative.

MG is an independent, non-denominational, co-educational primary school located in Mooroolbark. With caring teachers that love their jobs and small class sizes that ensure personal attention, children move confidently through our comprehensive curriculum that includes a strong focus on developing independent learning skills.

At MG we believe that knowledge should be empowering and that a good education should prepare young people so that they can make a difference, wherever they go. To nurture this ambition, we work with the children to develop a love of knowledge. We teach them the skills to become effective problem solvers through the Applied Scholastics program. We teach them to reason with the information they are given. Above all else, we encourage them to seek out and enjoy a challenge.

Applied Scholastics teach methods of learning which markedly improve a student's ability to understand and apply what is being studied in the classroom. The educational technology was developed by American author and educator L. Ron Hubbard. This breakthrough method known as Study Technology, is learned by all Mooroolbark Grammar students and is a cornerstone of Mooroolbark Grammar's successful approach to education. The basic fact is that students fail to learn because no one actually teaches them how to learn—that is, how to identify the barriers to learning and how to overcome those barriers.

We provide all this in a safe, caring and welcoming environment that gives children the confidence to spread their wings and reach their full potential. We are a small school with a strong sense of family. This means we have the time and interest to really get to know your child and help them get the most from their years at MG.

Class Sizes

Our class sizes are capped at sixteen students. During key learning times, like literacy and numeracy, an aide works with the teacher, providing a student/teacher ratio of 1:8. This ensures that each child has the opportunity for one-on-one assistance if they need it. Additionally, students are given the opportunity to work with a Teachers aid 1:1 outside of the classroom. Our teachers personalise learning by development of individualised learning plans catered to the child’s interests and learning needs.

The Arts

Creative expression is an important part of a child’s education and so children receive a weekly art lesson in our fully equipped art room. The school also has a fully equipped pottery room with kiln.
All students receive a weekly general music/performing arts lesson. We also hold an annual whole school concert for parents and friends.

Sport

We offer a range of competitive and non-competitive sports off and on field including swimming, tennis, basketball, soccer, skiing, football (AFL), equestrian and more.
We compete in cross country and other sporting competitions within and outside of the Yarra Ranges Division throughout the year.

Enriching Excursions

Excursions are an important part of education at MG. Applied Scholastics approach to learning places considerable emphasis on real world learning.
The purpose of receiving an education is so that the child can use what he or she has learned in their life. We have found that children that are allowed the freedom to explore and experience what they are learning are generally happier within themselves than those restricted to a mainly classroom-based education. Excursions also improve academic outcomes. We also have an annual camp for grades 3-6.
