Our School

John Monash Science School (JMSS) is Victoria’s first specialist secondary school focussed on science, mathematics and associated technologies. Formed as a result of a unique partnership between the Department of Education and Training (DET) and Monash University, the school accommodates 650 young men and women in Years 10, 11 and 12 (VCE).

Curriculum

Students in Year 10 study English, Maths, Physical Education, Issues Studies, Emerging Technologies, and Core Science - a combination of Chemistry, Physics and Biology - as well as their choice of Emerging Science electives (see below) and Languages.

At Year 11 and 12 level (VCE) JMSS offers a wide range of Science and Mathematics courses as well as Languages, Accounting, Economics, Geography, History, Information Technology, Politics, Literature, Media Studies, Music, and Physical Education.

"Little Scientists - Big Science" involving students in Year 6 coming to JMSS every fortnight to work with JMSS Year 10 students on a science project;

Regional Science Exchange where Year 10 students from around rural and regional Victoria come to study at JMSS for a three-week block to broaden their horizons in science (more information at www.regionalscienceexchange.com.au);

Year 10 students around Australia can study Emerging Science electives in real-time classes such as Nanotechnology and Astrophysics through ESV – Emerging Sciences Victoria (more at www.emsci.vic.edu.au).
