About Us

Welcome to Erasmus Primary School.
We are a non-denominational, co-educational primary school located in Hawthorn, Melbourne.
The school is named after Desiderius Erasmus, a 15th-century Dutch scholar and philosopher who believed in the power of educating children.

We aim to provide each child with all that they need to flourish and develop into caring, thoughtful, resilient and happy adults for the good of society. We live by our school motto: Let your light shine.

Curriculum

The education we offer our students seeks to nourish the whole child at four levels – body, mind, heart and spirit.

We provide a thorough grounding in all subjects including English, Mathematics, Scripture and Philosophy, Science, Health, the Arts, Physical Education, History, and Geography and we take a classical approach to languages including studies in Sanskrit and Latin.

We use simple mindfulness exercises to help focus the mind and enable children to develop an inner quiet, strength and steadiness. They are then able to attend with greater application to the task at hand.

Meals

Students and staff sit down together every day to enjoy a wholesome, organic morning tea and lunch freshly prepared in our own kitchen. Children are taught to serve others before serving themselves.

The Arts

Visual art is an essential part of the curriculum and we work to build and develop the skills and artistic talent of every child.
In addition, all children participate in needlework and woodwork classes during their time at Erasmus.
The curriculum also includes music, drama and dance. We coordinate regular performances and celebrations throughout the year to provide the opportunity for children to demonstrate their skills and become comfortable sharing their skills with an audience.

Physical Education

Physical education (PE) is an integral part of the curriculum at Erasmus Primary School. Each week every child participates in sport and dance suitable to their age and stage of development.

Technology

We aim to create a good balance between traditional teaching methods and new technologies. The children are introduced to the concept of technology as a vehicle for research, composition, creativity, communication, information storage and sharing. They gain an appreciation that technology is one of many tools used for learning, researching and gaining knowledge.
