Our College

Located in a natural rural setting, and easily reached by an extensive bus network, Saint Ignatius College Geelong is a proud Jesuit Partner School pursuing academic distinction while promoting conscience, compassion and service to others.
The College belongs to the network of 95 Jesuit schools in Australasia and the remarkable Jesuit education network of schools and universities worldwide.
Our students are challenged to excel by one of the giants of the Church, the 16th century Spanish courtier and soldier, St Ignatius of Loyola.

The motto, "Competence, Conscience & Compassion", effectively mirrors the educational philosophy, which nurtures a pathway of development of the whole student in academic, physical, social, cultural and spiritual domains, all within a motivating and supportive environment.

Christian values, spirituality and personal growth are central to the school ideals and all students participate in Religious education classes which provide a basis for dealing with the uncertainties of our ever-changing world.

As part of the Ignatian tradition, the Saint Ignatius College community is called to strive for “the Magis” -a calling to strive to be one’s best, for more universal good and a more generous service to others.

Curriculum

The commitment of our young women and men to rigorously develop skills and talents underpins all they do. Students engage intellectually and spiritually and work collaboratively to develop lifelong learning skills.
Academic challenge and rigour are fundamental to all curriculum development and student work practices, and we are proud that the College is ranked amongst the top performing Catholic Co-educational colleges in Victoria for VCE results.
Invaluable opportunities are provided by an enriching broad academic curriculum, a laptop program for all students across the college, a variety of co-curricular activities, many of which reflect our coastal-rural environment, and pastoral care program.

Always pursuing best practice in teaching and learning, we embrace new initiatives, innovation and new technologies. Exceptional delivery of these dynamic programs, within model learning spaces, continues to strengthen student learning.

Integral to a Jesuit Catholic education are immersion experiences in language and culture, the latter allowing our students to engage in the realities of the world while reflecting on the values of human dignity and servant leadership.

Student welfare programs

The College takes great pride in its Pastoral Care system with a student counsellor available. . In traditional Jesuit terminology, cura personalis aims to provide care and support for each student as a unique and gifted young person. The country grounds are divided into areas where students of all levels mingle together, and other areas where they can mix with friends of their own age group.

The Middle School (Years 7 and 8) homeroom teachers instruct students in many of their core subjects in their homeroom and provide a stable environment for confidence to develop as they grow. The homeroom encourages a more personal school experience and consequently students are nurtured in their endeavours, both as students and as individuals. Year 9 and Senior School students in Years 10, 11 and 12 continue to be supported by the strong Pastoral Care system led by the year level Coordinators Schools and homeroom teachers.

Christian values are an important part of the school philosophy and a Social Justice Student Group is active on local and wider issues. The school develops leadership through the SRC, Class Captains, School Leaders, House Leaders, Sports Team and Community Service Leaders. Retreats allow for opportunities for students to develop strong collegiality and preparation for the academic year ahead.

Sport

The Sports program is well developed and growing, and provides opportunities for all to participate in school and interschool competitions that can lead to higher levels. The College fields many successful teams in a variety of Sports.
The Sports program is well developed with 147 Sports teams in 25 different Sports in which students can participate in school and interschool competitions that can lead to higher levels and we have Regional, State and National champions.

Co-curricular activities

Activities include leadership and local and overseas Social Justice community projects, Public Speaking, Debating, Sports, Chess, award-winning Performing Arts Musical Productions, Orchestra, Choir and overseas language and cultural programs, community service and immersion tours.
The vibrant Performing Arts program enables our young men and women to experience Music, Dance & Drama, to develop their special talents, and perform in a variety of settings. The Year 7 Instrumental Music program enables all students to experience playing an instrument with the option to progress further

Facilities

Numerous new buildings and facilities in recent years reflect the ongoing pursuit to provide enriching experiences and opportunities for students.
The Xavier Centre, a Year 7 and 8 precinct, which includes 16 classrooms and associated staffrooms, adds to our many new outstanding learning spaces accommodating the recent growth in student numbers of over 1250.

The College is proud of this recent addition and another recent Year 10 precinct, comprising 8 classrooms, numerous staffrooms and presentation rooms, and inclusions to the extensive sporting facilities of recent mod-grass tennis courts and fitness centre.

The magnificent Drysdale Catholic Church adjacent to the College grounds is used extensively.

To cater for growing student numbers, plans are underway for an additional Sports Hall, which will have many critical uses, including a space to gather as a whole school. In addition, a new Year 9 Centre will accommodate students in a separate precinct providing programs and facilities unique to that level.
