About Berengarra

Berengarra is a co-educational school that provides innovative educational programmes to meet the individual needs of adolescents who are experiencing problems in mainstream school.

Student Welfare

Our programmes focus on the development of self-esteem and resilience through emphasising areas of strength, strengthening basic learning skills and the development of self understanding.

Curriculum

The Curriculum is divided into core subjects and elective subjects. The core subjects are maths, language, health education, information technology, materials technology, science, art, food technology and physical education.

Students ballot for four electives each term. Electives can include drama, sculpture, wood turning, community involvement, robotics, advanced computers, metal work, music, Canoeing, outdoor education, farming, advanced writing and specialized catering.

An underlining feature in all curriculum areas is meeting social and emotional as well as academic needs.

The School Structure

The school now has a campus in Box Hill and a campus in Ashwood.

The Box Hill campus caters for students aged between 12 - 16 and has a maximum capacity of 30 students.

The program at Ashwood is different from that at Box Hill. It is for 15 - 17 year old students who are considering vocational training, and therefore has a TAFE work component. This program has a capacity of 24 students.
To ensure that individual needs are met as best as possible, class sizes are small, and kept to 10 students or less.

The Cribb

The Cribb is a room at school just for students. It has a lot of different uses. It is good to relax in at recess and lunchtime and it is a happy and safe environment. There's a playstation, a pool table and air hockey. You can buy food and drinks too.

The Cribb has a wonderful youth worker, who makes sure everything runs smoothly. The Cribb has fun games and activities. It is also used for group welfare programs.

Leaving Berengarra

The school sees itself as a loop out of the mainstream system. Students generally stay for between one and two years. Most students continue in education either in the TAFE system or a secondary school, while some students find employment.
