Gippsland Grammar School

Gippsland Grammar

Gippsland Grammar is one of Victoria's leading regional schools. The School is a co-educational Anglican school with an enrolment of over 1000 students across our three campuses. Together with an excellent boarding facility and a strong Early Learning Program, we hope to provide for all the learning needs of students from across Gippsland and beyond.
The School's philosophy is one of encouraging students to take appropriate learning risks within a supportive environment. There are opportunities for students to participate in a wide variety of activities and it is rare that there is nothing in the School that engages or lights a flame within each student. As students are encouraged to try new endeavours outside their comfort zone, their peers and teachers recognise that they are 'having a go' and so encourage and empathise with them. We celebrate success and strive to do our best but we do not lose sight of participation for its own sake.
The ultimate goal for Gippsland Grammar is that each student reaches their potential, especially academically. We have a dedicated staff that is prepared to help and guide the students, whatever their ability. We make no apology for the strong academic focus and we are proud of our students and staff and the VCE results they achieve. There is also a strong pastoral emphasis and a recognition of the need to cater for each student's spiritual growth and their understanding of the need for compassion in their dealings with others. The School has a strong community service program and, in general, the students determine which activities they wish to support.

History of Gippsland Grammar

St Anne's Church of England Girls' School was founded in 1924. Gippsland Grammar School for boys commenced in 1961. The two schools amalgamated as St. Anne's and Gippsland Grammar School in 1971 and became known as Gippsland Grammar in 1997.
Today, Gippsland Grammar caters for students from three years of age through to Year 12, with boarding facilities for secondary students.
The former St Anne's Church of England Girls' Grammar School site has been developed as the Junior School, known as St Anne's Campus.
Our Bairnsdale campus, catering for students from Early Learning to Year 6 opened in 2006 on a site at 86 Bullumwaal Road Wy Yung.
The Senior School, known as Garnsey Campus, is located on the former Gippsland Grammar School site on the northern side of Sale, adjacent to Bishopscourt.

Community Context

The School has a vital part to play, as one of the few independent schools serving Gippsland, in attracting and keeping professional families by offering a high quality education for their children.
Being a regional school, we rely on links with all sectors of the community and seek to establish positive links with neighbouring schools and TAFE colleges as well as with regional groups of schools such as SEISA and ICCES.

Involvement

The School aim is for students to become fully involved in the curricular and co-curricular life of the School. Students take part in an extensive Outdoor Education program or can choose to be involved in the vibrant Music program, diverse Drama productions, the very hands-on Vocational Education and Training courses or choose to play chess, debate, speak publicly, improvise in Theatre Sports or become Future Problem Solvers .. and the list goes on.

Opportunities

The learning opportunities are endless. The School has an International focus that encourages student exchanges, study tours, and the hosting of home-stay students in order that their world view is developed. Students are given opportunities to participate in many external subject competitions and Olympiads. They can dance, play their instruments, compete in aerobics competitions and sporting events with other students across this region, the state and even nationally.
Ultimately, a world of opportunities awaits them after they complete their VCE and take up the opportunities they have made for themselves beyond secondary school, that a successful VCE result affords them.

Pastoral Care

Student and staff relationships are structured to maximise the educational, social and emotional well-being of students, to attain the most effective and efficient use of human and material resources, and to facilitate the learning opportunities and satisfaction of all members of the School. The School believes that Gippsland Grammar is a calm and safe place where students can participate in learning and school activities to achieve to the best of their ability. The Student Behaviour Management policy aims to:
• promote positive behaviour, mutual respect and co-operation through pastoral and academic care initiatives.
• establish well understood, positive and logical consequences for student behaviour which seek to restore relationships between people when these have been damaged by inappropriate behaviour, using the principles of restorative justice.
Gippsland Grammar students are friendly, have excellent social skills and are inclusive and tolerant. In a School of over six hundred students there is little conflict and the respect students show to each other, staff and others is heart warming. The School believes that happy and healthy students are better learners and will grow into happy, healthy adults who make a positive contribution to their communities.
