Our School and Vision

Lindfield Montessori Preschool is a safe, caring, non-denominational learning environment for 3 to 6 year old children of all backgrounds. It is a fun, child-centred environment where children develop at their own pace and education is viewed as an ‘aid to life’.

Established in 1975, Lindfield Montessori Preschool is one of the oldest Montessori schools in NSW. Set in the leafy surrounds of West Lindfield, it offers a Montessori environment for 20-30 children and enjoys an intimate sense of community.

Our vision is that all children in our community develop a love of learning, allowing them to reach their full and richest potential, having respect for themselves, others, the environment and the community as a whole.

The Philosophy

In accordance with Maria Montessori’s philosophy, the program is tailored to the individual needs of the child, to nurture their potential and self-development. Our sensorial approach fosters the child’s innate curiosity in a stimulating and encouraging manner. The teachers guide the children in using natural, concrete experiences to nurture the child’s ability as a creative, disciplined, motivated and independent thinker.

Our Community

Lindfield Montessori Preschool is a not-for–profit organisation. The preschool is licensed by Community Services and registered with the NSW Board of Studies as a school for teaching of the kindergarten year. All parents become members of the non-profit incorporated society and they are expected to volunteer their time to assist with running the preschool and participate in fundraising and maintenance.

Staff Training

All staff are conversant with the Montessori method and the current Directress has qualifications awarded by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI). Our current staff are highly qualified and have a formal qualification in early childhood at either diploma or degree levels. The team is dedicated to child development and providing the best possible environment for children.

Attendance Pattern & Enrolment Commitment

Lindfield Montessori Preschool offers a program for 3 to 6 year old children. As soon as possible after their 3rd birthday, children attend for 3 hours a day, 5 days every school week for their first two academic years. When the child is ready to progress, usually during their third year, they attend the extended day program for 6 hours a day. This helps to consolidate their learning from the prior two years and develops self confidence, leadership and responsibility.

Children enrolled in Lindfield Montessori Preschool must commit to the full enrolment period of approximately three years. As the third year typically coincides with when the child would begin kindergarten in NSW, parents must be committed to completing the entire program on enrolment of their child in order to preserve the beneficial mixed age environment.

Education in harmony with life

• Every child is a unique person with creative potential, the drive to learn, and the right to be treated with respect as an individual
• Development of the whole child and the integration of the intellectual, emotional, physical, spiritual and social aspects of life
• Development of independence and adaptability of the child
• Education is seen as an aid to life and preparation for it
• Children must be given freedom to work and move around within guidelines that enable them to see themselves as both independent and part of a group
• The purpose of education is to nurture the energies of childhood, intellectually, physically, emotionally and morally, so that every member of the human race can make a constructive contribution to the world
• The child is not taught but learns how to learn. The adult’s role is one of observer and facilitator
• Children are encouraged to work at their own pace. The Montessori materials help children explore and master their environment through activities which aid the development of the whole personality.

We encourage parents / carers interested in finding out more about Montessori to attend the Preschool open day or to book an “in classroom” observation. This allows you to visualise the principles in action and discover the benefits for your child’s development.
