Academic Program

Brisbane Boys’ College provides a rigorous academic environment which allows every boy to aim to maximise his educational potential. The basis of our educational philosophy at Brisbane Boys' College is simple - a successful education does not teach students what to think, but how to think. If we are to prepare tomorrow's leaders, we must help them to develop flexibility of mind, strength of character, social skills and a sound belief system.

As a boys' school, Brisbane Boys’ College is specifically tailored to meet the needs of young men as they progress through their education. Excellence is valued and academically gifted students are challenged to reach their full potential. Indeed students at all ability levels are provided with individual support and attention and the school prides itself on the care offered to all.

A broad range of subjects are offered, from the fundamental three R's of learning - reading, writing and arithmetic - to performing arts disciplines, vocational training subjects and technology areas such as robotics and multi-media. This broad educational framework permits boys to choose their own direction, whether it be on to tertiary studies or directly into the workforce.

Brisbane Boys’ College offers a number of enrichment opportunities for students wanting to extend their academic abilities including participating in state and national competitions, extension holiday programs or they can elect to take advanced study classes across a range of subjects.

Extra-curricular Activities

The comprehensive and extensive out-of-school curriculum seeks to provide additional opportunities for character development, decision making, problem solving and leadership. In striving for the education of the whole person, Brisbane Boys' College aims to provide as many activities as possible, within and outside the formal school curriculum. It is intended that much of what has been termed a co-curricular activity is merely an extension of what occurs in the classroom.

Participation in activities at Brisbane Boys’ College, though not compulsory, is expected. The College does not regard cultural activities as more important than sporting or vice versa. The lessons learnt and experiences gained occur regardless of the specific activity. The College does suggest though, that some physical activity be included in each student's routine because of our concern for the health and physical well being of every student.

Generally, it is recommended that every student be involved in a minimum of one cultural and one sporting activity per year at Brisbane Boys’ College.

Cutting Edge Technology

Brisbane Boys’ College is leading the way in creating classroom environments that will prepare students for an ever changing technological landscape. Tablet PCs, a more advanced and interactive version of a laptop which uses pen enabled technology, are being integrated across the campus.

The College’s 1-to-1 Learning program is revolutionising the classroom and changing the ways boys think and learn. The program unites sophisticated technology and software with relevant content and innovative teaching.

The technology encourages boys to explore new digital learning spaces through on-demand access to global resources and allows teachers to place more emphasis on the individual. Teachers are able to view each boy’s screen from their own Tablet PC which enables them to observe students in ‘real-time’; for example teachers can see each step a boy takes to solve an equation. With this information teachers can identify when boys are using higher level thinking skills or equally where they have gone wrong and provide personalised instruction and feedback.

By 2012 all students at Brisbane Boys’ College from Years 7 to 12 will be part of the College’s 1-to-1 Learning program.

Becoming a boarder at Brisbane Boys’ College is so much more than having somewhere to live and eat while studying at school. Boarding is a way of life that offers unique opportunities; to meet friends from around the world, develop confidence and independence with support from your houseparents and live with your friends.

Since 1909 boarding has played an important role in the life of the Brisbane Boys’ College. Boys develop a special sense of belonging and community within the College when school becomes home for much of the year. Boarding provides a stable educational environment for boys to grow and develop independence and character while learning to cooperate and live with others in a close community.
