RIDBC Alice Betteridge School

Our School

Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children’s (RIDBC) Alice Betteridge School caters for children aged 4 and a half to 18 years who have a significant sensory impairment as well as a mild to moderate intellectual impairment which requires substantial specialist teaching.

RIDBC Alice Betteridge School’s program is founded on the belief that children with sensory impairment should receive the best possible education to assist them to reach their maximum potential.

At RIDBC Alice Betteridge School, students benefit from individualised educational programs that combine academic and functional skills to address the students’ sensory impairment. The school liaises with families to work towards attaining appropriate learning outcomes for each student based on the student’s strengths, and the student’s and family’s aspirations.

Students are taught in small classes by skilled special educators, assisted by teacher aides. They are also supported by a team of specialist staff including therapists and administrative personnel. RIDBC Alice Betteridge School has transdisciplinary therapy team including; speech pathologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, an orthoptist, audiologist and psychologist.

Our Values

RIDBC Alice Betteridge School has a philosophy of child-centred learning. We work closely with families to design, implement and monitor learning programs that will enable each student to achieve their full potential.

In everything we do we are always:
• Respectful to all people: We recognise, accept and embrace diversity and treat everyone with dignity and respect
• Ethical: We are honest, moral and principled
• Child and family focussed: We always come back to the question ‘how will this benefit the child and their family?’
• Sharing knowledge: We create, learn, and share knowledge
• Striving for high quality: We strive to produce the highest possible outcomes in everything we do
• Innovative: We embrace change and look for new ways to achieve our goals.

Curriculum

RIDBC Alice Betteridge School educates children with sensory and intellectual impairment to achieve their maximum potential. We develop an individual plan (lP) for each student to support them to acquire and develop; academic skills, communication skills, social and community skills, vocational skills, domestic and self-care skills, and recreation skills. Each plan is holistic and child-centred, designed collaboratively with input from the student, their family and transdisciplinary school team.

To achieve positive learning outcomes, we assist each student to achieve their communicative potential by utilising a range of communication options such as print, large print, braille or other tactile forms, or in picture symbols.

RIDBC Alice Betteridge School recognises the importance of the family as the basic building block on which children develop new skills. The school has a strong commitment to the partnership between families and school staff. There are a range of special annual activities to which families are invited, including; a sports fun day, family picnic day, open days, parent information sessions and presentation/graduation celebrations.
