About our College

Mentone Girls’ Secondary College has many features that sets it apart as a high performing State Secondary College. As a girls’ only school, students are encouraged to strive to achieve their best in every endeavour in a safe and accepting environment. Each girl’s talent is nurtured and valued, through participation in academic, sporting, artistic and civic leadership events and activities.

As the College prepares students for the next phase of their education and in their adult life, the values of independence and responsibility are actively promoted.

As Miss Nina Carr, the first Principal of Mentone Girls’ High School, said in 1958: “We hope that the time they have spent at this school will give them courage to set for themselves and pursue the highest possible standards and that they will become useful members of the society of which they will form a part”.

Vision Statement

Mentone Girls’ Secondary College students, through courage and work, will develop compassion, independence and tolerance in a dynamic learning environment enabling them to make a fulfilling contribution in local and global communities.

Curriculum

Students at Mentone Girls’ Secondary College are offered a wide range of subjects and learning experiences. In Years 7 and 8 students follow a core curriculum with a choice of language (French or Japanese). In Years 9 and 10 a wide range of elective studies are offered. Students have the opportunity to undertake a VCE acceleration subject at Year 10. At VCE level subject offerings allow students to undertake study that suits their future aspirations, including Vocational Education and Training (VET) subjects. All classes are 75 minutes long, enabling deeper learning opportunities.

Enrolment

All prospective Year 7 students must complete the Southern Metropolitan Region Application Form which will be distributed at their Primary School. Students living in the neighbourhood zone who choose Mentone Girls’ as their preferred school are automatically placed.

Application for enrolment at Mentone Girls’ Secondary College at other year levels can be made by students living within or outside the College neighbourhood zone.

Leadership

Leadership at Mentone Girls’ Secondary College contributes significantly to a student’s preparation for life as she is empowered to assume a positive place in an evolving global and democratic community. We believe opportunity and skill development is the key to building leadership. Providing the opportunity to lead and follow through a range of experiences enhances personal growth.

College student leaders run school assemblies and year level assemblies on a regular basis. SRC Members, Peer Support Leaders, VCE Committee, Magazine Committee, House, Sport, Music and Form Captains all plan and help to manage functions and activities in ways that epitomise their emerging leadership skills.

The Student Leaders at MGSC have provided an active voice for all students, as well as working to improve the quality of both student and community life through leadership, listening to suggestions, school involvement and fundraising. Overall our girls are moving towards our goal of developing strong, independent young women who will make outstanding leaders in the future.
